ISS PhD fellowships in Development Studies
The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), located in The Hague, Netherlands, is offering five prestigious PhD fellowships in Development Studies under the Global Development and Social Justice research program. These fellowships are open to non-EU international students who wish to pursue their doctoral studies in various areas related to development.

Additionally, there is one PhD fellowship available specifically for research related to the Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa.
Scholarship Value and Duration: Selected PhD students will receive a monthly fellowship of €1,630, along with an allowance to cover fieldwork costs, typically conducted during the second year of the PhD program. The duration of the fellowship is a maximum of four years, starting from 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be citizens of countries not included in the European Economic Area.
- A Master’s degree in one of the Social Sciences or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university or Institute for Higher Education is required.
- A research proposal focusing on one of the specified areas is necessary (4-6 pages).
- Proficiency in English is essential, as evidenced by a degree from an English-speaking university or the results of a recognized proficiency test (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, or British Council).
- Three referees who can provide information about the applicant’s academic strengths are required.
