The main UNSW campus is located on a 38-hectare site in Kensington, seven kilometres from Sydney’s central business district. Art & Design in Paddington and UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy are two other major campuses.

The University of New South Wales Library is one of Australia’s major research libraries, with extensive scholarly information resources. On two campuses and affiliated research institutes, it serves a large population of academic staff and students. The UNSW Library is a prominent landmark in the eastern suburbs, visible from many kilometres away. When residents need a change of scenery, the Main Library and the Law Library are excellent options for focused quiet study.

How to Apply for University of New South Wales
- Apply using the online application portal
Create a portal account. Select the term and community you would like to apply for. The application will then ask you some questions and ask you to submit a photo and some references.- Pay the $50 application fee
The $50 application fee is non-refundable and is required before you will be considered for membership within the New College Communities. A single fee covers application for both the New College undergraduate community and New College Postgraduate Village. While you will be able to express a preference for which community you desire to live in, and this preference will be taken into consideration, the Admissions Office in consultation with the Deans will ultimately determine which College you are more suited to, and offers of membership will be made accordingly. The New College Online Application Portal is secure and online payment is protected by ANZ. If, you have difficulty completing the online application or paying, please contact the Admissions Officer at [email protected].
- Book an interview
Our staff will contact you as quickly as possible once you have completed the online application and your application fee has been received. The Admissions Officer will arrange a time for you to be interviewed by the Dean in person, or if this is impractical, by phone. Applicants living so close as to be within 2.5 hours travel time of UNSW should make the necessary arrangements to be interviewed in person at New College. Applicants from further afield are encouraged to attend an in person interview, where possible, in conjunction with a tour of the College. An interview cannot be scheduled until the application fee has been paid.- Download the two reference forms (an academic and a personal reference)
Your referees will need to submit these forms as soon as possible as we need them before we make you a final written offer.
The academic referee should be a senior person in your school, course or university. The personal referee should be a person who has known you for some time, e.g. family friend, doctor, sports coach, club official etc. Referees should send them to the College as soon as they can for you. It is your responsibility to ensure your referees send the references directly to the College. They will be treated confidentially.

- Interview with the Dean of Residents
The College places great importance on the interview. The Dean of Residents conducts interviews and considers applications in association with the Master. Whenever possible, this is done in-person followed by a tour of the College. Otherwise, a phone interview will be arranged.
The New College Communities at UNSW operate as not-for-profit affiliate colleges of the University of New South Wales and every effort is made to keep fees as affordable as possible.
The fee summaries below relate to future residents. Returning residents are often eligible for loyalty rates and should find this information when published in the College’s internal weekly newsletter towards the end of the year.
Fee Summary
New College
Residents at New College do not pay weekly rent, but instead an ‘accommodation fee’ for 44 weeks’ residence and membership. The accommodation fee covers:
- Full catering (3 meals, 7 days per week) plus fruit, bread/condiments and milk
- Weekly housekeeping
- Air conditioning
- Pastoral care
- Academic support
- High speed internet (40GB standard with 100mbps download/upload speeds) at no extra cost. Additional data can be purchased if required.
- Utilities (power, water, rubbish & recycling)
- Formal social events and College suppers
- Full access to student facilities such as the music room, resource room, and games room.
The standard contract period is for approximately 44 weeks covering the full academic period from the start of O’Week until the end of the formal examination period at the end of Term 3. Outside of this time, residents normally return home over the summer break. If needed, residents may pay an additional charge to stay in College at other times. Because residents are only committed to a 44 week contract period, this may provide significant savings compared with needing to pay a 52 week rental period.
In 2022 the standard contract period is:
44 week contract period from Sunday 6 February to Sunday 11 December 2022.
Acceptance of membership is a contract for financial responsibility for the whole of this period. Termination of residency is usually at the end of the year and can only be varied with the approval of the Master.
New College Postgraduate Village (NCV)
The membership fees for New College Postgraduate Village (NCV) include:
- Accommodation in a private, furnished room with a private bathroom
- A kitchen (in apartments) or kitchenette (in studios) with utensils and appliances provided
- Weekly housekeeping
- Air conditioning
- Pastoral care
- Academic support
- High-speed internet (40GB standard with 100mbps download/upload speeds)
In 2022 the standard contract period options are 48 weeks and 44 weeks, beginning in January or February 2022.
Places are limited and rates are available upon enquiry.
For over 50 years, the New College Communities have continued to build character in each individual who becomes part of the College community.
We encourage residents to strive for academic excellence, serve one another and make contributions to the wider community. To assist residents to fulfil these outcomes, the New College Communities have developed several equity-based scholarships and bursaries to support residents with specific needs or disadvantages. Applications are assessed by the Master and the Dean of Residents of each college in two rounds each year. Scholarship and bursary assistance awards are conditional on College membership.
To be considered, applicants must have been accepted into membership of New College or New College Postgraduate Village, and have typically experienced some form of educational, economic, and/or social disadvantage. The contributing circumstances could include:
- Financial hardship
- Difficult home/family circumstances
- Rural/remote isolation
- Language difficulties
- Excessive family responsibilities
- Disrupted schooling
- Physical or mental disability
- Serious family illness
- Prolonged illness or condition
The scholarships and bursaries offered by New College Communities are presently only available to Australian and New Zealand Residents.

- Your application will be assessed and, if successful, the scholarship or bursary will generally be awarded after the commencement of the academic year.

Stuart Barton Babbage Fellowship
Available for: NCV residents (and postgraduate New College residents)
Value: by consultation
This scholarship honours the Rev Dr Canon Stuart Barton Babbage AM, the second Master of New College, by supporting the growth and development of an outstanding student pursuing postgraduate research at UNSW. The Fellowship is only open to residents undertaking a doctorate, postdoctoral work or, in some cases, a research masters from any UNSW discipline. The Fellowship is only awarded when a suitable applicant is available. Application for this scholarship must be accompanied by a letter with supporting documentation.
New College Access Accommodation Scholarship
Available for: New College residents
Value: up to $6000
This residential scholarship is only available to incoming residents. It is awarded based on financial and other hardship. Each Access Scholarship is subject to an annual review and typically only runs for two years.
Founders’ Bursary
Available for: New College residents
Value: up to $6000
This bursary was instituted in 2002 by the New College Board to honour the founders of the College. Open to new or returning residents, each Founders’ Bursary typically continues for up to two years, subject to annual review. Recipients must maintain a distinction average or higher.
Alumni Scholarship
Available for: New College residents
Value: up to $4000
This scholarship is offered thanks to the generosity of New College alumni. The value of this scholarship is dependent on available support. The purpose of the Alumni Scholarship is to enable new or returning students to come to College, who, for financial reasons, may not otherwise be able to do so and, as a consequence, may be unable to attend university. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need, academic merit, leadership qualities, community participation, and potential to contribute to community life at New College.
Indigenous Scholarships
Available for: New College and NCV residents
Value: up to $6000
New College Indigenous Scholarships are to support indigenous students whose financial means are insufficient to meet the costs of living within the College and who do not already have another funding source, such as an external accommodation scholarship, or the Residential Cost Option provided by the Australian Government. Applicants must also demonstrate academic merit, leadership qualities, and potential to contribute to community life at New College. Indigenous Scholarships are available to new or returning residents and are subject to an annual review.
Bible Society Young Scholars
Available for: New College and New College Postgraduate Village residents
Value: $2000-$5000
This program promotes Christian scholarship amongst those living at New College and New College Postgraduate Village while they study at UNSW. Each scholarship is awarded for one year, however scholarships may be extended subject to performance and available funding. Applications for this scholarship must be accompanied by a letter addressing the specific criteria.
Jared Pritchard Memorial Scholarship
Available for: New College residents
Value: up to $6000
This scholarship is named in memory of Jared Pritchard, a very talented and creative young man who lived at New College for four years but sadly passed away in December 2010. It is awarded based on the applicant’s ability to contribute to the creative and performing arts within the College community. Academic performance and financial hardship will also be considered. Available to new or returning residents. This scholarship may be awarded to more than one candidate in a given year.
New College Rural & Regional Faculty-Based Undergraduate Scholarships
Available for: New College residents
Value: $2000 per scholarship
New College offers a suite of scholarships to assist students based on faculty enrolment with the University of New South Wales. Each year there is one New College scholarship available for each UNSW faculty. Applicants from rural and regional Australia enrolling at UNSW in the following faculties are welcome to apply:

The scholarship is available to new or returning residents. The student’s home address must be in rural or regional Australia. Each scholarship is subject to an annual review.
New College, UNSW Regional NSW Scholarships
Available for: New College residents
Value: $2000 per scholarship
New College offers a suite of regional scholarships to assist students from each region of New South Wales to be able to afford to live at New College while they study at the University of New South Wales. In 2022, there will be up to three Regional Scholarships available for each of the nine NSW regions (outside of metropolitan Sydney). Applicants from regional NSW are encouraged to apply based on the following regional zones:
- New College University Accommodation Regional Scholarship (Central West & Orana)
- New College University Accommodation Regional Scholarship (Far West)
- New College University Accommodation Regional Scholarship (Newcastle & Hunter)
- New College University Accommodation Regional Scholarship (Central Coast)

For the purpose of these scholarships, NSW regions are defined by the NSW Government map at: https://transportnsw.info/regions#/. Please note that while these scholarships are not open to UNSW students from Greater Metropolitan Sydney, the Illawarra-Shoalhaven and Central Coast regions are both shown within the Sydney & surrounds regional area on this map.
The scholarship is available to new residents only. The student’s home address must be within the relevant regional area of New South Wales. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial hardship, including loss of income due to drought and the impacts of coronavirus.
PhD Scholarships
Available for: NCV residents
Value: $2000
These scholarships are available to new and returning residents (with a 44 or 48 week contract) who are enrolled in a PhD program at UNSW. Recipients must be active members of the NCV Research Community and engaged with the wider community life of the College. Scholarships will be awarded for the entire 44 or 48 week contract period but will only be issued at the end of the first full term of residency to observe active membership in the NCV community. Recipients can re-apply each year subject to continuing active membership in the NCV community.
Bursary Assistance
Available for: New College and NCV residents
Value: $500-$3000
A limited amount of Bursary assistance is available, awarded annually depending on need and volume of applicants each year. It also takes into consideration the College’s capacity, as a not-for-profit organisation, to provide support in any given year. The assistance is offered to new and returning residents based primarily on financial need, with academic merit and other special needs also being considered.
