Best Ways to Cleaning Sunbrella Fabric:
One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella fabric looking its best is to brush off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric and to wipe up spills or clean them as soon as possible after they occur. Remember that spills and stains are easier to remove the sooner you clean them. According to Sunbrella, 98 percent of stains are easily removable by applying a cleaning solution of water and mild soap directly to the stain and scrubbing with a soft bristle brush. Yes, it’s that easy! For the remaining 2 percent of stubborn stains, try spot cleaning with diluted bleach and soap.
Another common concern we hear at Alischolars is that outdoor cushions will develop mold and mildew. Even though it is known that Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth, it can still grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed. Here, bleach comes into play! Don’t be alarmed; if you follow these steps, you won’t need to worry:
Prepare a 1 cup bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of water solution.
Spray the entire area and allow 15 minutes for the solution to absorb into the fabric.
Sponge, clean towel, or extremely soft bristle brush the entire surface area.
Thoroughly rinse to eliminate all soap residue

Machine wash with cold water and line dry, or dry clean professionally.

Local Cleaning (For Non-Removable Fabric)
Using a spray bottle, apply a fine mist of water and mild soap.
Using a sponge or a very soft bristle brush, rub the solution into the stain while lightly cleaning the area. Eliminate scrubbing.
Rinse carefully to eliminate all soap residue.
Using a clean, soft towel or sponge, absorb or wet-vacuum excess moisture.
Air dry. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until there is no remaining soap residue.

Monthly, fabrics should be rinsed with clean water. This prevents dirt from becoming deeply ingrained in the fabric and eliminates the need for more frequent, thorough cleaning. Every two to three years, a thorough cleaning will be required in the majority of environments.
When it is time to thoroughly clean Sunbrella fabric, it can be cleaned while still on a boat or awning frame, or it can be removed for cleaning if it is large enough. If a boat cover or awning is large enough to accommodate a washing machine:
Use mild soap.
For more stubborn stains, add 1 cup of bleach to the wash.
Cleanse and rinsing with cold water.
Air dry. Never subject Sunbrella to heat.
After machine washing, re-treatment for water and stain resistance will be required.
To clean Sunbrella while it is still attached to a boat or awning frame:
Brush away any loose dirt.
Water down.
Prepare a cleaning solution consisting of water and a mild detergent, such as Woolite or Dawn dishwashing liquid, for cleaning.
Use a brush with soft bristles to clean.
Permit the cleaning solution to penetrate the fabric.
Rinse until all soap residue has been removed.
Air dry.
Depending on the fabric’s age, it may not require re-treatment.
Cleaning Detachable Sunbrella Material by Hand
Soak the fabric in a solution containing 1/4 cup of mild detergent per gallon of lukewarm water.
Use a sponge or a brush with soft bristles.
Rinse carefully to eliminate all soap residue.
Air dry.

Some removables are machine-washable; however, before removing the casing, consult the furniture manufacturer. Remember to zip up every zipper. Use an appropriate spot remover to pre-treat heavily stained areas. Wash delicate items in the washing machine with cold water and a normal amount of mild detergent on the delicate cycle. Air dry.

Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth; however, mildew may grow on the fabric if dirt and other foreign substances are not removed.
Per gallon of water, combine 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap.
Spray the entire area and allow 15 minutes for it to absorb into the fabric.
Use a sponge, towel, or very soft bristle brush to clean the area. Note: When cleaning the coated side (underside) of Sunbrella Plus, Supreme, or Clarity, omit this step.
Rinse carefully to eliminate all soap residue.
Air dry.
If stains and/or mold are severe, increase the amount of bleach used. To avoid water rings and stains, it is ideal to clean the entire surface. See our stain chart for specific stain removal instructions.
Only for Sunbrella Sheers:
Add 1 cup of bleach to the solution for cleaning.
Soak fabrics in the diluted cleaning solution for 10 to 15 minutes.
Best results are achieved by washing in cold water (stop machine prior to agitation).
Air dry.
- Oil-Based Discolorations
Immediately absorb with corn starch, let sit for 10 minutes, and use a straight edge or ruler to remove excess. Then, continue with the cleaning process.

- Re-Treating Sunbrella For Cleaning Ease
Sunbrella fabrics are treated with a water and stain repellent finish during the finishing process. This finish is intended to last for several years, but after a thorough cleaning, it may require reapplication. Glen Raven® suggests 303® Fabric GuardTM as the best re-treatment for Sunbrella fabrics. After a thorough cleaning or five years of use, fabrics should be re-treated.

Sunbrella fabrics should be treated with 303 after each thorough cleaning, which typically removes the fabric’s original finish and reduces its water repellency.
Utilize one of the above methods to clean Sunbrella fabric.
Allow Sunbrella to air dry completely.
Apply 303 in a well-ventilated area according to the container’s instructions.
Apply 303 in a thin, even layer and allow the fabric to dry.
Apply a second thin, uniform layer of 303. (Two light coatings are more effective than one heavy coating at restoring the water resistance of a fabric.)
A 16-ounce bottle will cover between 75 and 100 square feet of fabric.
- Helpful Suggestions
Protect the area around your Sunbrella fabric when using bleach, as it may discolor fabrics that are not Sunbrella. Always thoroughly rinse Sunbrella fabrics.
Please consider the environment when using bleach for cleaning. Bleach can have negative effects on the surrounding ecosystem. We do not recommend using bleach if you are surrounded by a body of water or other potentially impacted environment.
Sunbrella air-dries very quickly. The use of a dryer is unnecessary.
If the fabric has wrinkles, use a steam iron, but only on the synthetic setting. Test a small, inconspicuous area prior to ironing the entire garment, as some irons exceed the recommended synthetic setting temperature.
