The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung provides scholarships to both German and international students who wish to pursue Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degrees at German universities and technical colleges. Their mission is to support young talents who are committed to personal development and strive to become among the best in their chosen field.
Who can apply?
Students from all around the world are eligible to apply for these scholarships. The Foundation particularly welcomes applications from students with limited financial resources or those with a migration background. Whether you are a German citizen, a foreign student with previous education, or someone with refugee status, you can apply if you meet the other requirements.
What does the scholarship offer?
If you’re selected, you’ll receive a monthly stipend of up to €744, along with a monthly flat-rate study fee of €300 that you can freely use for educational purposes. Additional financial support includes contributions to health insurance (up to €71 per month), long-term care insurance (up to €15 per month), and a family allowance (€155 per month) for scholars with children.
The Foundation also encourages international experiences during the funding period. They provide subsidies for travel expenses, tuition fees, and international health insurance to support study or research stays, language courses, and internships abroad, lasting up to 12 months.
Eligibility criteria:
To be eligible for the scholarship, you should demonstrate a commitment to socio-political goals, such as active participation in student council, youth work, associations, NGOs, or political organizations aligned with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung’s values. You should possess qualities like political thinking, critical thinking, teamwork, self-reflection, and openness to different perspectives.
For Bachelor’s and Master’s applicants:
- Confirmation of admission or enrollment at a German university or technical college.
- Foreign applicants must show sufficient German language skills.
- First-year students should apply before or at the beginning of their first semester.
For PhD applicants:
- Unconditional notification of admission to the doctoral program.
- Foreign applicants must show sufficient German language skills.

The application deadlines for Master’s degree scholarships are 30 November for the Winter semester and 31 May for the Summer semester. PhD candidates can apply at any time.
