The HEB Memorial Bursary is a scholarship opportunity offered by James Cook University in memory of the late Robert Hebden, a beloved local cartoonist who passed away from cancer in 2014. Robert’s artistic contributions spanned over 50 years, with his weekly cartoons published in local newspapers for over four decades.

He was also a talented musician, playing the drums and guitar for various local bands, including The Pacific Mainstream Jazz Band, for more than 40 years. To honor his legacy, Mr. Dennis Hebden, Robert’s brother, established this bursary.

Eligibility:

The HEB Memorial Bursary is available for Bachelor of Education, Masters of Teaching & Learning (Internal students only), and Bachelor of Arts students. To be eligible, applicants must be admitted to one of these programs at James Cook University.

Selection Criteria:

Candidates applying for the HEB Memorial Bursary will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  1. Financial Hardship: Students experiencing financial difficulties will be given priority for this scholarship.
  2. Art Portfolio Assessment: Students enrolled in specific courses, such as ED1442, ED3194 (Bachelor’s degree), or ED5953 Arts Education for (Primary) School (Master’s degree), must have submitted an Art Portfolio for evaluation.
  3. Any Other Appropriate Criteria: The Selection Committee may consider additional factors deemed relevant for the selection process.

Scholarship Value:

The HEB Memorial Bursary provides partial funding of $2,000 to the successful recipients.
