Who Can Apply?
The scholarship is available for students from selected focus countries or regions, which vary each year. Candidates must have already obtained a university degree, as support is not provided for bachelor studies.
They should also demonstrate above-average academic performance and have a good command of the German language (B2-level). Moreover, candidates are expected to be actively engaged in voluntary work and have a strong interest in political issues. A positive attitude towards democracy and human rights, along with an open-minded and tolerant approach, is essential. Motivation and a clear vision of their life goals are highly valued.
Fields of Study:
The scholarship program is open to candidates pursuing Master’s or PhD degrees in any subject at German universities and higher education institutions.
The financial support varies depending on the type of study. Master’s or postgraduate students receive a monthly scholarship of €861 for a standard funding period of two years. PhD students who have obtained unconditional admission to a German university receive €1,200 per month for up to three years.
The program also funds research stays in Germany for a min
imum of three semesters. Additionally, PhD scholars can apply for financial assistance for research stays abroad. Refunds for fees related to courses directly connected to the candidates’ studies are also available, up to €1,500 per semester (excluding regular semester and annual registration fees). Health care insurance, family allowance, and children’s allowance can be subsidized upon request.
Candidates have two ways to apply for the scholarship. Those living in countries with planned selection conferences can apply through the respective foreign offices or directly to the responsible KAS office. If already in Germany, applicants can apply online through the Foundation’s website before 15 July (12:00) of the respective year.
