Removing an old tile backsplash can appear to be a difficult, if not impossible, task. There are questions such as, “How do I begin to remove this stone-tiled wall?” Will removing the tile damage the drywall? What if I get in there and am unable to finish?’ Or perhaps just ‘what the hell am I doing?’ I know because that’s how I felt before hammering down my old tile backsplash. I’m here to tell you that YOU CAN DO IT!

It all starts with the proper tools and equipment. Put on your best demo outfits, ladies (and gentlemen…I know you’re reading this), because this can and will get messy.

Let’s get our hands dirty!

Steps
Remove everything from the counters.

(Man, these counters are ugly!)

Take the covers off the outlets. And turn off the power to the area where you are about to remove the tiles from the outlets.
Remove the microwave and any microwave brackets if it is attached to the wall. Mark the holes for reinstalling the microwave bracket on the wall with a marker.

Tile Removal 101: How to Remove a Tile Backsplash Without Causing Damage to the Drywall

Cover the sink with tape and a plastic bag. The last thing you want is for some old ceramic tile to become entangled in your garbage disposal. You can also line the countertop with plastic to catch falling tile.
Put on your spectacles and gloves. (Is this even a step?)
Using the grout cutter, score the first tile you intend to start with. In the grout area, run the gout cutter around the tile edges. Then, using the tile cutter, make an X motion within the tile. This will loosen the tile even more, reducing the possibility of damaging the drywall behind it when you begin removing the tile from the wall. removing tile 2 copy Tile Removal 101: How to Remove a Tile Backsplash Without Causing Damage to the Drywall removing tile 4 copy

6-2Repeat step 6 one more time for good measure.
Tap the tile (gently) in the middle of the cuts with your hammer. Tile fragments should fall.
Then, using the flat head screwdriver and hammer, chip away at the tile in the corner or where it’s chipped, being careful not to dig into the drywall.

Then insert the scrapper into the gap left by the tile. Continue going under the surrounding tiles, gently popping the tile from the wall by prying it from the wall with the scraper and hammer.
Once the tile is in place, use a 5 in 1 tool and scraper to scrape away any excess grout. This can also be accomplished by using a light sander with fine grade sandpaper.
