Adam’s apple: What it is, what it does, and how to get rid of it

The Adam’s apple is a piece of cartilage that protrudes from the larynx, or voice box. Males are more likely to have it.

The Adam’s apple, also known as a laryngeal prominence, is the cartilage in the front of the neck that surrounds the thyroid and throat. It is present at birth, but it grows during male puberty or with testosterone hormone therapy.

Males typically have higher testosterone levels than females, so their Adam’s apples are larger. Biological females, on the other hand, may develop an Adam’s apple if they use testosterone or transition genders.

Surgery can be used to remove or alter the size of an individual’s Adam’s apple.

The Adam’s apple is made of cartilage, which is a firm but malleable connective tissue. Cartilage, which makes up several other parts of the neck, is strong but softer and more bendable than bone.

Typically, an individual’s Adam’s apple develops during puberty. It grows halfway up the neck, around the front of the larynx, just above the thyroid. The structure aids in the protection of the vocal cords from external injury.

Why do Adam’s apples grow?

Gender and sex exist on a spectrum. To refer to sex assigned at birth, this article will use the terms “male,” “female,” or both. More information can be found by clicking here.

The vocal cords are housed in the larynx, which is located at the front of the neck. These are tissue folds that vibrate to produce sound.

The larynx, along with other body parts such as the mouth and nasal passages, produces a person’s voice. It also guards the airways while swallowing.

During puberty, testosterone causes the vocal cords of males to thicken and lengthen. The cartilage that surrounds the larynx grows and then tilts forwards, forming the Adam’s apple.

The Adam’s apple serves no other purpose than to protect the voice box from injury. Without one, a person can function normally.

Male and female differences

Although Adam’s apples appear in both males and females, they are more prominent in males.

This is due to the fact that the male larynx grows larger and faster during puberty. Males have deeper and louder voices than females due to their larger larynx.

Hormonal differences influence the development of both the larynx and the Adam’s apple. As a result, some men have larger larynxes and deeper voices than others.

A female may have a larger larynx, a more prominent Adam’s apple, and a lower-pitched voice for the same reason. Is Adams apple attractive?

Adam’s apples of various sizes can be found in males, females, and nonbinary people. Because hormone therapy and surgery can alter its appearance, apparent gender is not a good predictor of Adam’s apple size. As part of a gender transition, some people reshape their Adam’s apple.

Adam’s apple removal and surgery

Physical health is unaffected by the size of a person’s Adam’s apple. However, the size can be an issue if a person believes it does not fit their body type or gender identity.

Someone with a prominent Adam’s apple, for example, may be uncomfortable with what society considers a masculine feature. Others may desire a larger Adam’s apple for the same reasons.

A surgeon can transplant cartilage from elsewhere in the body to increase the size of an individual’s Adam’s apple. A case study published in 2017 described how the surgeon used cartilage from the ribs to improve the appearance of the Adam’s apple.

Excess cartilage from the area around the thyroid can also be removed, reducing the size of the Adam’s apple. A chondrolaryngoplasty is the medical term for this procedure.
